5 ways pilates helps post partum

mat pilates for pregnant

Read about how Pilates can benefit a new mum, or find out for yourself with our Pilates + Gyrotonics Week 12 – 20 November with a 30 min taster for £20.

Overall, Pilates can be very user-friendly, and addresses the typical needs of a new mum in these ways:

1) strengthens the pelvic floor + abdominals

Addresses changes that have happened in the body due to pregnancy and birth, especially around the pelvis and lower back. This includes strengthening the pelvic floor and abdominals.

2) prevents discomfort from breastfeeding

Helps mobilise, strengthen and open upper back, neck and shoulders to prevent discomfort due to breastfeeding and carrying the baby.

3) conditions + tones

Develops overall strength and mobility after a period when exercises has been reduced/limited.

4) improves body awareness

In addition to reducing overall tension and together with increased strength of postural muscles, this enables mum to learn how to move with more awareness and therefore reduces the risk of getting injuries from the physically demanding life of having a small child.

5) provides a sense of calm

Centres and rejuvenates body and mind during a period which can be challenging and stressful

Aud Ausbo worked as contemporary dancer in London before embarking on her training to be a Pilates instructor with Moira Stott (Toronto) and the Pilates Foundation UK. She is also a certified instructor of Gyrotonic® Level 1 and Skinner Releasing Technique (contemporary dance), both of which greatly influence her teaching. Aud believes that Pilates is an ideal technique for creating a well balanced, strong and supple body. In her teaching she focuses particularly on helping her clients achieve freer and more efficient movement and an increased sense of body awareness. Aud has recently completed a Master’s degree: The Body in Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and is the manager of the Pilates equipment studio at triyoga.
