Kundalini is a Sanskrit term from ancient India that describes an inner energy and consciousness which lays dormant at the base of the spine until awakened.
The kundalini is a vital force or energy that we all have within. It has often been depicted as a serpent coiled around the first chakra or root chakra, a form of latent spiritual energy which when activated or awakened is known for its transformative power in the process of both self development and spiritual development. The capacity to intensify and raise energy in the body has been explored for thousands of years as a natural human potential.
The image of the snake is used to represent this source of raw energy.
The chances are that many of you reading this will have experienced a kundalini kriya (movement of kundalini rising) without the awareness of it. The kundalini can be aroused by many varied practises including deep meditation, pranayama (breath manipulation techniques), the practice of asana in yogic practice, chanting of mantras and advanced tantric sexual practices. In fact the orgasmic response in the body is a part of the kundalini response.
Through Kundalini yoga altered states and higher states of awareness and consciousness are experienced. It is a yoga practice that is specifically designed to activate and rebalance the nervous and glandular systems, both of which take a beating in the often busy and hectic city life many of us lead and can contribute to feeling exhausted, depressed, irritated, anxious and just a general sense of being under par.
A Kundalini yoga class includes a dynamic blend of postures, pranayama, music, mantra and meditation, which teach the art of relaxation, self-healing and elevation. It is a powerful practice that will increase vitality and ability to heal, energize and balance the glandular and nervous systems, strengthen the whole body and clarify and uplift the mind. By using these alchemical tools of Kundalini yoga the student is enabled to take control of their health and well being. Learning to work with energy of the kundalini is learning how to restore the natural power of the whole mind body system.
Vitality, contentment, unconditional acceptance, presence and an indwelling sense of peace are all hallmarks of an awakened life.
