Massage is one of the oldest forms of healing, and Lomi Lomi is one of the most sacred forms of massage. So, what makes it so sacred and how is it different from other types of massage?
In Hawaiian language, ‘lomi’ means to take turn or to shift. When Hawaiians say a word twice, they are emphasising the weight of importance. When we talk about Lomi Lomi, we mean touch-therapy body work that has been designed to change our body, mind, emotions and life for the good.
This body work is a unique combination of physical science and spiritual art that comes from ancient Hawaii. It is a form of full body massage that includes rhythmic movements and soothing long forearm strokes from light to deep pressure to realign the body, improve circulation and restore overall well-being.
As a client receiving a Lomi Lomi massage, the main difference you will notice is that the massage is performed on your entire body at once. Unlike most other massages where the therapist uncovers and treats one body region at a time, a Lomi Lomi practitioner will use long flowing strokes that go from head to toe in a continuous, rhythmic movement – massaging both the top and the underside of your body. By using these long continuous, flowing strokes as touch and connection, the person receiving the treatment can relax their entire being and let go of any old, limiting patterns stored in the cells of our body. This type of massage is not just a physical experience; it facilitates healing on the mental, emotional and spiritual levels.
Because of the specific wave-like movements, the energy in the body is freed. This makes the body soft and full of vitality. The ancient Hawaiians believed that energy can also get stuck in the joints – therefore, gentle stretches and rotations of the joints are performed to improve their flexibility and encourage energy flow.
The Lomi Lomi practitioner works intuitively with every client; no two massages will be the same. The massage may be slow and relaxing or, at times, a little faster and more invigorating. Sometimes the recipient may experience an emotional release as the massage can help you shift negative beliefs. The healing effects of the massage continue long after the massage is over.
