all you need to know about workshops at triyoga

Here at triyoga we put on workshops throughout the year across all of our centres for students who would like to learn more or enjoy a longer and more immersive experience. Whilst some people attend workshops regularly, we know that a lot of you may not know what one entails and whether you are have the right experience to attend one. So we’ve written a go to guide for workshops, hopefully answering all your questions.

what are workshops all about anyway?

A yoga workshop enables students to delve deeper into their practice, by giving more time and attention to a particular topic than a class would allow. Whereas most classes have similar structures, workshops can vary massively depending on the topic and the teacher.

Some workshops offer the opportunity for an extended practice and time to delve into a particular topic or part of the body. Others, such as gong and sound baths, give you the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the deep relaxation that can’t be accessed so easily in 60 – 90 minute classes. Others will be more lecture and discussion based, with the learnings taken to be able to be fed into the physical practice at a later date.

There are workshops on anatomy, philosophy, the chakras, specific styles of yoga, breathwork, trauma release, meditation, anxiety; whatever you are looking for, you can bet we probably have it.  And if we don’t, then let us know – we’re always looking for inspiration.

but I’m not good enough to go to a workshop…

For many people going to a workshop can seem like a hugely intimidating thing. Those questions of ‘am I good enough at yoga?’, ‘have I been practising for long enough?’ or ‘will I feel out of place? start ruminating and in the end we can all too easily get talked out of it.

It’s true that some workshops are for the more advanced practitioner, but on the whole they’re open to all and offer you a way to have more time to explore your practice, deepen your practice, have more time to connect with other students and to take that added time out from the craziness of life.

If you’re worried about going to a workshop on your own, why don’t you encourage a friend to come along with you and share the experience?

what’s the difference between an in-house + a guest teacher workshop?

We split our workshops between in-house teachers and guest teachers.

In-house teachers are the brilliant teachers and therapists you’ll find on our schedules at triyoga. You may have gone to a class with them and thought you want to delve deeper into the wonders of yoga with them and a workshop is the perfect opportunity. They tend to put on a number of workshops throughout the year, often across a number of centres – so if you can’t do one, you should have another chance.

Guest teachers are teachers who generally come from abroad and tend to teach internationally year-round rather than setting up base at a home studio. On the whole they may only come once every year or two years, although some come more often than that. You can find a list of who is coming and when here: https://triyoga.co.uk/discover/guest-teacher-workshops/

with so many to choose from how do you choose the one right for you?

Here are some tips for if you’re looking for a workshop but just don’t know where or how to start:

Pick something you’re working on in class. Perhaps you’ve noticed parts of your body that need a little love, like tight hips or a weak core – find a workshop that focuses on this and can help you understand how to progress in your everyday practice.

Pick something that resonates with you. You might not know why, but suddenly you’re drawn to a lucid dreaming workshop, or one on breathwork. Listen to the gut and follow your instincts – your body often knows best…

Try a few – it’s the same with a yoga class, no workshop is the same and it will depend on the teacher and the topic how much you get out of it. If you go to one that you didn’t enjoy don’t be put off but instead consider what you’ve learnt about what you’d want to take away from a workshop and use that information for booking onto another one.

If you’re not sure about going to a workshop and it’s an in-house teacher taking it – go to one of their classes ahead of the workshop, see if you feel a connection and want to explore your yoga journey more deeply with them.

If it’s a guest teacher then find out a little bit more about them. Look at their websites, see if you can find any testimonials, look for articles and interviews with them or search to see if they’ve done any podcasts

aren’t workshops alway fully-booked?

There’s a misconception that the workshops are always full. Sure some of them sell out quite far in advance, particularly Jason Crandell, Elena Brower and Donna Farhi, but on the whole you will have the opportunity to study a topic with a smaller group of interested people. There are often still spots available right up until it starts, so if your plans are cancelled last minute there’s always a workshop that you can go to!

when do workshops take place at triyoga?

Our in-house workshops tend to take place across the weekend and are scheduled generally six weeks in advance. It depends on the centre but here are the scheduled slots:

Camden: Friday evening, Saturday morning and afternoon, the occasional Saturday evening, Sunday morning + afternoon – times can vary

Soho: not so many take place here because it’s the home of teacher training on the weekend but there are workshops here sometimes on Friday evening, Saturday morning and afternoon, Sunday morning and afternoon – times can vary

Chelsea: Friday evening 7.30 – 9.30pm and Sunday afternoon from 4.00 – 6.30pm

Ealing: Friday evening 7.45 – 9.45pm and Saturday afternoon 2.00 – 4.30pm

Shoreditch: Friday evening 7.15 – 9.15pm and Saturday afternoon 2.30 – 5.00pm

Guest teachers generally teach in Camden or Soho, but you will find the occasional workshops with them across the other three centres. They tend to be on sale around 6 months in advance (sometimes more, sometimes less).
