Children of all ages go through huge developmental changes in their bodies. Here we explore these beautiful and fascinating stages and how osteopathic treatment can help them.
NEWBORNS (0-2 months old)
No one ever said it was easy to come into this world, and there are a lot of challenges ahead for a little baby. Newborns feel so precious and fragile, and for parents it is nice to check if everything is OK and aligned with their little one. Some of the most frequent reasons why parents decide to see an osteopath for newborns are: latching issues, colic, reflux, flat head syndrome (plagiocephaly), neck tension, sinus congestion and when the labour has been very long or very short. The main osteopathic technique applied to babies is craniosacral or cranial, as it is highly efficient and really gentle, and allows us to realign whatever restriction we may find.
2. INFANTS (2months-1yr old)
The age for a lot of firsts: first smile, first unassisted sit, first crawl – the list goes on! Infants are going through a lot in terms of development, and it is very helpful to check if their alignment is correct, as many habits start to take place at this stage. With gentle osteopathic techniques misalignments can be easily resolved. Some of the common issues that osteopaths can help with are: digestive problems, flat head syndrome, sinus congestion, upper respiratory infections and sleeping problems.
TODDLERS and PRE-SCHOOL (1- 5yrs old)
As children start to grow a little more and start going to nursery, it is common to see an increase in upper respiratory tract infections. Osteopathy can help prevent further damage such as acute bronchiolitis, sinus congestion or glue ear. Because children are entering the age where they love running, jumping and all kinds of playing, it’s beneficial for parents to check if they are using their bodies in a balanced way. Osteopathy can help to alleviate the pain and unalignment that can come with the bumps and bruises.
SCHOOL AGE (5yrs old +)
When they reach this beautiful milestone children’s brains are very busy learning everything and they start to show interests in things such as music, sports, dancing, drawing or reading. We are here to support them whatever they do at this stage so they remain mindful, balanced and with a healthy posture. Osteopathy is great to support their rapidly growing muscles and bones, and can provide them with the support and tools they need.
The power of therapeutic touch for children goes beyond the physical wellness, and can reinforce their self-esteem and belief in themselves. Osteopathic treatments also provide great benefits for children with special needs, and treatments can be applied and adapted so every child can receive this wonderful therapy with its numerous benefits.
