Freshly pedicured left foot compared to unpampered right foot.
Do you like feet? Let’s be honest – most people don’t.
‘It’s the part of the body many people don’t like’ confessed medical podiatrist Yvonne Mattis when I visited her recently for a podiatry taster.
Yvonne studied to be a podiatrist after someone suggested it as a career option, and she now works with the NHS, a private clinic and just recently at triyoga.
The term ‘medical’ doesn’t conjure images of a relaxing treatment, but I was still really looking forward to my taster with Yvonne. I have a good relationship with my feet, and I like to take care of them. Especially as a yogi, I spend a lot of time having to look at them.
But can a pedicure be ‘medical’? Does it hurt? Are there scalpels involved?
At the beginning of my taster, I noticed that there were many peculiar and interesting tools on her table. That, coupled with her wearing her white uniform and rubber gloves, made it all seem and feel more clinical than a traditional pedicure. Yvonne was both welcoming and personable and as I sat up on the chair, she started to examine my feet.
As it turns out, Yvonne confirmed my feet are in pretty good shape. There was just a small callous that she removed with a little scalpel, and some residue from a previous pedicure that was filed down. Yvonne explained to me that a medical pedicure not only deeply treats the feet, but it leaves them looking their very best. She finished the taster by buffing my nails and giving me a relaxing foot massage.
I learned that clients visit her for anything from stubborn verruca and corns, to more complex conditions such as plantar fasciitis and ingrown toenails. Even if there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with your feet, it’s beneficial to visit a podiatrist for maintenance and to check-in with the health of your feet – like you would visit a dentist for your teeth! After all, the feet carry us through life and we often forget to give them back some well-deserved TLC.
Tips for your taster with Yvonne:
– Don’t go wearing nail varnish – this allows her to better assess the health of your toenails
– Don’t be shy – Yvonne has seen it all in her podiatry career
– Relax and enjoy – let Yvonne make you feel at home and you will be astounded with what you learn about yourself and your feet!
Yvonne Mattis works on Friday mornings at triyoga Soho.
