winter self-care rituals: healthy habits for body + spirit

winter rituals treatments blog

So here we are, we’ve survived January and now face this last stretch of winter. This is the time of year so many passionately wish away, but it can be a valuable time to set intentions for the year and prep and boost our health. We just need to get through it as comfortably as possible.

Traditional Chinese medicine links winter to the water element which is nourished by stillness and rest so that our energy force is strong for the expansion of spring and summer. This natural urge to hibernate and snuggle into a cocoon until winter ends can be at odds with the burst of activity demanded of us now as we roll ahead with the new year into studies, work and life.

Showing your body some love at this time of year sets the pace for a much happier and healthier experience as we journey through the wheel of the year towards spring.

root vegetable stews for winter

Fuel yourself with warming, nutrient-dense food

First thing we need to do is stoke our internal fire and the best fuel for that is warming nutrient-dense food. Chinese medicine recognises the energetic qualities in ingredients such as whether they’re cooling or warming. Right now, spices, slow-cooked stews, root vegetables, broth’s simmered with ginger and spring onion and warming drinks are all the superfoods we need. Vitamin D and other immune-boosting supplements are also essentials.

spice-infused water for hydration during winter

Stay hydrated with spice-infused water

Central heating is very drying, so the combination of cold, damp and dryness means we need the right kind of hydration. Winter bodies crave warmth so a flask of spice-infused water on cold days is more nurturing than a cold juice and a perfect pick me up on the way to your yoga class or work. Make your own by simmering a tiny piece of cinnamon bark with a slice or two of ginger and a couple of cloves.

Wrap up, tight

Moving on to the external now, since the elements and viruses are strong we need to keep our extremities warm and protected. Head, neck area, hands and feet are all entry points into the body and vulnerable to what we call “cold or wind invasion” in Chinese medicine. So wrap up.

Free up energy flow with acupuncture

Aside from addressing specific conditions, acupuncture treatment can also serve as a seasonal MOT for the body.  Our immunity needs to be on top form now and a good way of boosting this is to ensure we are as well-rested and nourished as possible.  Acupuncture points are like little dials that open up various gateways in the body, freeing up blood and energy flow. Keeping this flow balanced and strong is a powerful antidote to winter blues and lethargy.

facial gua sha at triyoga

Get yourself a gua sha massage

Cold can make our bodies feel contracted and sluggish so massage is another power tonic right now. Gua sha is an ancient Chinese massage technique where a tool made from stone, crystal or metal is used to create friction in the muscular tissues boosting blood flow and releasing toxins. It’s easy to do at home and the perfect self-care massage practice.

My top winter Gua sha tip is to gently massage around the upper chest and shoulders while taking deep breaths. You will see some redness appearing, this is the “sha” which is the release of toxins and stimulation of blood flow. If you’ve had a cold, this technique is so effective for clearing away congestion. You can also use it over sore muscles and as a daily relaxation ritual before a long magnesium flake bath.

two feet soaking in water

Foot soaking, a golden ritual

Last and certainly not least, is foot soaking. This is the absolute self-care golden ritual I pass on to my clients and it’s a guaranteed effective and easy way to bring warmth into the body, boost sluggish circulation and detox all in the comfort of your own home. It’s also super relaxing and with some candles and time to decompress can be as luxurious as you want it to be. All you need is hot water in a large washing up bowl, magnesium flakes and ten minutes to go from woe to wow when you need reviving.

You may also have your own winter rituals that keep you going, they all make a difference. Tend to your body and your spirit now and your well will (hopefully) be full until spring.
