OHMME menswear launch + tips for men new to yoga

OHMME yoga clothing for men is launching at triyoga, and to mark the occasion we’re continuing with our pledge to encourage more men onto the yoga mat! Read on for some of our most common FAQs answered and an insight into this pioneering yoga wear brand for men.

When you Google ‘men and yoga’ you’ll find a list of articles with titles such as ‘Do real men do yoga?’ ‘Are you man enough for yoga?’ ‘Why more men should practice yoga’ etc. It’s time to move past any pre-conceived ideas. Yoga is something that everyone can benefit from, whatever your gender, age or physical ability, there’s a class/teacher/style of yoga out there to suit you.

If you’re a guy who’s yet to make it to a yoga class, or you know someone out there who you want to encourage to come along, read on and share our basic insights and tips below.

What are some of the benefits of yoga?
– Enhances posture and muscle tone
– Facilitates prevention and rehabilitation of injuries
– Increases core strength and flexibly
– Builds better balance and coordination
– Improves function of your lungs, heart and circulation
– Improves sports performance
– Helps to relieve stress

Where to start
A yoga beginner’s course is the best way to start. It’s 4 to 6 weeks of consecutive classes with an experienced teacher. The sessions have a limited capacity, which means you get more one-on-one attention from the teacher and it might feel less intimidating than walking into a busy class for the first time. You’ll start by learning the very basics and build your practice week-by-week. By the end you’ll be able to take on any Yoga Open or Yoga Level 1 class with confidence. From there, or alternatively, you can get stuck into the intro offer which is 30 days of unlimited yoga for £40. This is your ticket to trying as many classes as you like, getting to know the different styles of yoga offered, the teachers and importantly, what feels good for you!

Yoga when dealing with chronic pain or an injury
At the beginning of every class, the teacher will ask if anyone has any injuries or is working with something that may affect your practice. They will offer appropriate modifications of the postures throughout the class to ensure that you stay safe and get the most out of the class. Yoga is wonderful for helping ease and cure things such as back pain and neck pain and rehabilitating injuries. Remember to always check with your doctor if you are unsure about attending a class or you have just had surgery.

What you need to bring
Just yourself, and a bottle of water is recommended. Most studios provide yoga mats and props. You might want to bring a small hand towel. Depending on the class, it can get sweaty – the towel will stop your hands from slipping on your yoga mat

What to wear
Comfortable clothing that’s easy to move in. Stay away from clothing that’s too loose and going to get in the way. There are some brilliant brands out there who make clothing designed specifically for yoga – OHMME being one of the first to focus solely on yoga wear for men.

About OHMME
The brand was founded by Louis D’Origny and Jonty Hikmet, two men with a passion for yoga! They gathered male yoga practitioners together to study different fabrics and designs, aiming to create a brand solely for men. By creating clothes which men could resonate with, the brand intends to break pre-conceived opinions and get more men on to the path of yoga. The clothes are made in a high quality factory in Portugal with the functionality of the design and fabric to suit men in their more dynamic focused practices. Look out for them throughout triyoga in the coming weeks. In the meantime you can check them out here: https://www.ohmmeyoga.com/
