the spirit of lomi lomi massage

The word Lomi Lomi is used to describe the healing massage originating from the islands of Hawaii. In the Hawaiian language – used traditionally – lomi means “to knead, to rub, or soothe, to work in and out, as the paws of a contented cat”.

The early Polynesian settlers brought their own form of massage to the islands, which evolved to become something uniquely Hawaiian. It was practiced by everyone from child to chief. As an indigenous practice that evolved over hundreds of years in isolated valleys throughout the island’s mountain chain, there are many different traditions of Lomi Lomi with different approaches and techniques, but with the same spirit.

Compassion and intention

Lomi Lomi is more than technique. Handed down through the ages from one generation to the next, it was and still is a lifestyle of health and wellness, both physically and spiritually. It has often been described as a Hawaiian healing massage that provides nurturing and loving touch.

Amongst the myriad of different styles and flavours within the Lomi Lomi tradition, the common denominator is compassion and loving presence. It is a heart-centred healing modality that provides a deep healing space, some of which is beyond explanation in words. One must experience it to truly understand its power.

Learning and commitment

Future practitioners were selected in childhood, around age 5, based on birth signs such as weather events, birthmarks (especially on the head), and kind behaviour. After a decade or more of study, they would begin to practice but mastery was believed to take a lifetime.

Contemporary, or integrative Lomi Lomi trainings are taught across the world and often don’t require the intense amount of training that is expected traditionally, in which a student might spend up to 20 years with a kumu (teacher). During this time a variety of techniques are handed down through the ages, which may include spiritual wisdom, for instance, ho’oponopono (a system for forgiveness that creates harmony and balance through expressing truth), herbalist practises as well as creating and utilising mana (creative or life force energy).

Lomi Lomi also requires a commitment to healing oneself. Students learn more about themselves and what their purpose in life might be through learning and practising Lomi Lomi. They learn how to honour and respect the body, the soul, Mother earth and how to bring harmony and unity to the community (lokahi). The elders acknowledged and worked with the forces, god, nature and humans to create this harmony.
