Maya Medicine is a comprehensive system of natural medicine that has flourished in traditional Maya culture for over two thousand years. It is still widely practiced amongst the modern Maya in Chiapas, through the Yucatan and Southern States of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.
Based on the principles of balancing the five elements of Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, Space and the interconnectedness of man and the cosmos, Maya Medicine heals by re-vitalising the life force energy inherent in all beings. Working at this core level, symptoms are traced back to the source of imbalance so that age-old problems and health issues can be cured, enhancing one’s personal growth and potential.
Diagnosis is done by pulsing and egg reading. An egg is passed over one’s energy field and when broken into a glass of water, reveals the energetic blueprint of the individual. Then a “limpieza” (cleansing) is given to release negativity trapped in the system and to increase the flow of energy in the main channels, followed by a diversity of techniques to help bring the mind, body and heart back into a unified whole. These include talking therapy, dream study, bodywork with massage and postural therapy. Different types of ceremony may also be employed, such as sweat lodges and house blessings along with the use of medicinal plants.
Maya Medicine is commonly used to treat chronic disorders such as anxiety and depression, emotional/psychological imbalances/trauma, relationship problems, spiritual/ancestral disturbances, addictions, tension and stress-related conditions, menstrual disorders and infertility, back pain and injury. Everyone can benefit, since the treatment enhances one’s flow of energy, which bolsters the immune system and helps cultivate a healthy approach to oneself, both emotionally and physically.
