What is Iyengar yoga?
Iyengar yoga is the creation of B.K.S. Iyengar of Bellur, South India, who Time Magazine listed as one of the most influential men of the 20th century. It is characterised by detail, precision, alignment, long holds and use of props.
B.K.S. Iyengar was the originator of many of the props that are used in yoga classes today, such as belts, bricks, straps, chairs and blankets. Teachers may ask you to use a prop to deepen your understanding of a posture or to help with a certain shape, action or direction. The props are not used because you can’t do something without them. Rather, they are to challenge you to explore and learn a posture beyond what you may already know.
What can I expect from an Iyengar yoga class?
Classes typically involve lots of demonstration from the teacher and detailed verbal instruction, guiding you through each posture. Your focus will sharpen and you’ll become totally aware of and absorbed by the practice.
Each class follows a theme. One week you might focus on restorative postures, another inversions and the next building strength. Themes rotate each month and are set by the teacher.
Anatomy and physical alignment are a big focus in every class, drawing on the teacher’s extensive technical anatomical knowledge. You’ll receive highly individualised teaching, according to your own mental and physical ability.
You’ll be in the very capable hands of a teacher who has at least five years of practice, plus two years of teacher training, plus five years of teaching experience. This is our minimum requirement at triyoga for all Iyengar yoga teachers.
