What is Kundalini yoga?
Kundalini yoga combines asana, pranayama, music, mantra and meditation, which can lead to a profound sense of personal transformation. Kundalini yoga was first introduced from India to the West in 1969 and it quickly grew in popularity, with teachers developing a variety of different styles to communicate the science behind the system.
What can I expect in a Kundalini yoga class?
In class, you’ll practise what’s called “kriyas”, which are cleansing techniques. These might be strong repetitive arm movements, breathwork and hand gestures. By using physical and mental strength to maintain these repetitive actions, you can start to overcome your mind’s desire to stop. The practice helps you gain the awareness and power you need to resist the temptation to fall back into bad habits and to help calm the mind. The aim is to burn off karma (past decisions), increase vitality and help heal.
While this isn’t a dynamic class in the same way as a Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga class, it can be challenging. Generally, you won’t flow through a sequence but the postures can be strong.
There’s also a strong community aspect to Kundalini yoga, with students and teachers often connecting both inside and outside the studio.
What are the benefits of Kundalini yoga?
Through a blend of asana, pranayama, music, mantra, and meditation, Kundalini yoga helps to strengthen intuition and willpower, as well as activate and rebalance the nervous and glandular systems. The practice is great for building stamina, strengthening the body, increasing lung capacity and helping people break unwanted habits and addictions. For this reason, a lot of students in recovery find this a powerful and transformative practice.
